ERC Squash News - 15 May 2008

All three courts back in action

Thanks to a lot of work from a lot of volunteers, we have managed to dry out the courts in record time.  All three are now playing very well.

Here are some pictures of the flood, the aftermath, and the court repair process.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who have helped - JJ, Neil T, Steve, Neil H, Richard C, Lisa, Richard A, Bob, Peter Rhodes, Mike F, Lin, Mary B, Frances, Granthan, Ben, Jonathon B and Martyn W.  If I have missed anyone, let me know!

Fundraising

The response to the chairman's letter requesting donations has been amazing.  So far the total has reached over £62,000. Here is the list of donors as of 21st March 2008.

The money raised from the Titanic evening alone raised well over £6,000.

Tournaments

Handicap Tournament 2008
Excellent competition with Dave Potter having a superb victory over Mary Boyle in the finals. Steve Porter beat Tom Heneghan in the plate. I'm already working on the handicaps for next year!

Leagues

These have been relaunched by Martyn Whiting and have received a lot of support.

Training

Training sessions are now on a Thursday night. There are regular attendances from men's and ladies' team players as well as social players keen to improve their games.  The format consists of lots of routines of varying difficulty with lots of advice and encouragement.

Junior Squash Section

Junior sessions are on Saturdays from 10:30 until 12:30.  Enquiries to Richard Avery.

County Squash

We have had a few of our members play for the county:

• Thomas Heneghan
  (U13 County #3)

• Clare Heneghan
  (U17 County #1)

• Gray Wilson

Clare represented the Mid West Area in the recent Area championship.

Gray was a member of the O60 Worcs team that won the National Championship - superb result!

Court Maintenance

Thanks to Steve P, Paul H, Bob S and others for repairing holes, sanding floors, clearing galleries, etc.

Thanks to Steve P, Johnny Johnson and Rob Fisher for installing the court heaters.

Racket Restringing

I (Paul Heneghan) offer a squash racket stringing service.

Stringing prices range from £9.00 for cheap synthetic gut to £18.00 for Tecnifibre.  Other strings available to order.  Grommet strips cost about £6.00 and need to be replaced every couple of restrings or so.

A 24-hour turnaround is often possible for urgent cases.
