Nellie had to retire injured against Rupert Kinder so Rupert will play Ed tomorrow. Have moved the game to 20:00 Hrs at Rupert's request. Match Reports from Round 2

Submitted by the Mystery Reporter!

In the first game of the evening, Craig Whiting battled it out with Renat Fleming. What a colourful character Renat is! He bounded around the court like an excited child; he did a little jig (reminiscent of Mary Boyle's victory jig) before he served followed by a swizzle with his racquet like a ? (what do you call those people who walk in front of a band swizzling a stick around?) [Ed: they're majorettes, and they swizzle batons] Then he held the ball up slowly and looked at it with such passion you would think it was made of gold! Craig watched and waited patiently with his hand on his hip as if to say 'quit the fancy stuff and get on with the serve mate!!'

It was a very fast and furious game - both players equally super fit. So you can imagine there were some good run-around rallies. Both players seemed to opt for the 'wham bam anything you can hit I can hit harder game!'. They both did try a few drops but did not win many points on these as the drops were either not very good allowing their fit opponent to reach the ball comfortably, or they were down - so they both reverted back to the wham bam technique. Craig had some good controlled length shots whereas Renat hit some very hard and tight straight lengths which made it look like the ball was magnetized to the wall

It was a close game and initially it looked like Craig would win, but he faded in the later games. Maybe he was saving himself for his football training after! Ahh the youth of today! Renat won 10/8 9/6 9/1.

I saw a little of the match between Vic Seymour and Philippa Usher. This was a comfortable game for Vic who kept the ball in play. Although a beginner, Philippa makes good contact with the ball and puts 100% effort into retrieving all shots ...and Smiles throughout!! I see a potentially good player here after some training and shot practice.

Jonathan Bomford had an easy win over Kevin O’Donoghue in his Round 1 match on Monday. Jonathan was surprised at the score expecting it to be tighter as Kevin is well known for running quickly around the court retrieving. Jonathan said he decided to play length shots to keep him in the back corners (and out of the way!!)...must have worked!!

Over and out!!

Monday 28th September - Round 1

Match of the day from Round 1 - Rohan Goonewadena v Thomas Heneghan

Submitted by the Mystery Reporter!

Rohan clearly had not played Tom before and must have felt pretty confident as they walked on court, being at least a foot taller. As the game started you could see the panic set in as he hit what he thought were winning shots only for Tom to retrieve them and play a great shot back. After being caught out like this a couple of times, Rohan started to shake his head in disbelief as Tom kept retrieving impossible shots. There were some great rallies and Tom was mostly composed, cool and controlled (apart from a glare at the marker when she called the score wrong!).

The first game was very close, and towards the end, both players were looking a little moist, and there may have been a bit of panting from Rohan? Rohan played like a gentleman throughout and congratulated Tom on his many good shots. At a critical time in the game, Rohan produced two unreturnable serves in a row and just managed to take the first game 9/7.

Tom got off to a great start in the second game. Having noted the devastating effect of Rohan's good serves in the first game, Tom now started to play better serves. These forced weak returns from Rohan and gave Tom the chance to play some wonderful slice drops which Rohan just could not get to. At 6/1 down Rohan was really feeling the pressure, and despite telling himself to 'come on', he could not halt Tom's progress. Tom just breezed through the second game with some great straight lengths and controlled drops.

In the third game, Tom got off to another good start, but Rohan stepped up the pressure with lots of low hard winners. Attemting to retrieve these along with all his retrieving from the earlier games started to take its toll on Tom, and his pace and shots lost a bit of zip. Rohan seized his chance and fired in winner after winner to take the third game 9/6.

The fourth game repeated the pattern of the third. Rohan knew he had to keep the pressure up to keep Tom at bay, so he kept his low hard winners coming. Tom was clearly tired - his little legs had covered a lot of court - and whereas he could reach Rohan's winners in the first couple of games, they were now just out of reach. So Rohan took the game 9/6.

A great match - from both players.
